Question by Theo29283: What type of engineering job would supervise outdoor projects/work outdoors?

What kind of an engineer would supervise and direct projects such as bridge building, road building, building towers, building windmillls in the sea, and by direct these, I mean that this engineer would be present at the site during the entire construction process and be outdoors the whole time with the construction workers. Would a mechanical, civil engineer do this type of work?

I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

After college I started working as a Construction Inspector, working on the wastewater projects in New York. Since, initially, I was the only inspector on the job, I inspected civil work, like excavation, concrete, structural steel, and masonry while the contractors built the foundation and the shell of the building. Then I inspected installation and testing of pumps, piping, heating system, generators, overhead cranes, and the odor control system.

Later, when I got my PE, I became a Resident Engineer / Project Manager. I now supervise a staff of inspectors, including Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical who do the types of things I did when I first started.

I am still located at the site full time, though I spend most of my time inside the field office now, doing things like review contractors' payment requisitions, negotiating change orders, attending meetings, preparing monthly reports, etc.

Even though my organization's main office is within walking distance from where I live, I still prefer to be out in the field rather than in the office.
