Irreconcilable Grievances: The Events That Shaped the Declaration of Independence

Primarily concentrating on the latter grievances in the Declaration of Independence not listed in prior petitions, Irreconcilable Grievances examines what altered the American Revolution from a civil war to a war for independence. This, coupled with the war's parallels to the Glorious Revolution of 1689 and the dire need for foreign aid were significant when Congress expressed the colonies' desire for autonomy. Irreconcilable Grievances is distinctive from other books not only because it will be the first to find unanimity in each one of these grievances, but will also show how each was complicated, often being based upon false presumptions. Not all the complaints listed on the Declaration of Independence triggered the sway of popular opinion from the restitution of grievances towards freedom from British oppression. From the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord through the spring of 1776, the majority of American colonists wanted to maintain their allegiance to the British Empire. It was only after certain events occurred within the first year of hostilities that the revolutionaries thought of declaring their independence

Through December 1775, only a small fraction of the revolutionaries felt independence should be declared, and these individuals were dubbed extremely radical. The fact is every one of the early grievances the colonies addressed was capable of being mediated. It was only once certain events transpired, while armed conflict was occurring, that most revolutionaries lost any trust they had remaining with the British government. If the events prior to Lexington & Concord were the significant factors that caused America to seek its independence, then one must query, "Why did they wait until July 1776?" Many of the grievances listed on the Declaration of Independence had already been listed and sent to England in petitions such as the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity for Taking up Arms or the Resolution of Congress on Lord North`s Conciliatory Proposal. If these initial grievances were what primarily pushed separation, independence would have been pursued much earlier, but this was not the case.

The aim of Irreconcilable Grievances is to discuss the pertinent events from July 1775 to July 1776 that influenced a large majority of the revolutionaries to call for independence. Much like any political stance today, people held their opinion based upon personal experiences as well as deductive reasoning. While the evolution of political thought was essential in gaining the support of intellectual classes, the unfolding of events themselves is what transcended to the average individual. Certain events within the first year affected individuals differently. In the case of Lord Dunmore's Proclamation, freeing the slaves did not significantly affect New Hampshire as it did Virginia and South Carolina. The same can be said of the British Navy's ability to prohibit commerce within New England's waters. The southern colonies were not considerably affected economically by such measures. The following hypothetical situation illustrates the point. If we were to interview each one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and query as to what most compelled them to split with Great Britain, what would each answer? When one thinks of this question, they realize a large variance of answers would arise.
