How important are essays for admission to Yale?

The rest of my application, while within the ranges for the average student, is not stellar. I was not offered an interview. However, my essays came out quite splendidly. They definitely define me as a person and my English teacher even remarked that they were the best she has ever read.
How much stock do you think Yale places on college essays?

Since the majority of students who apply to Yale have high GPAs and test scores, they often use essays to pick which of those many highly qualified students to accept. If you have, say, 100 people with a 4.0 GPA and a 2000+ SAT, and you can only pick 10 of them, the only way is by the essay and outside achievements.

So your essays may well be your best selling point. And they know that there's very little difference in student ability between a 3.8 and a 4.0 GPA, so the essay may outweigh an average GPA. On the other hand, many students will write great essays.

My point is, they certainly consider essays. But when they can only admit less than 10% of the people who apply, it means that some people with great everything will still be denied admission. There's just no way to tell which way the decision will go.
